Thermopro TP20 Thermometer Review

The Thermopro TP20 thermometer is a best seller on Amazon for good reason. If you are looking for an all around thermometer which you can use on the grill, in the smoker, oven or even in the fry pan this is the thermometer for you.

I love a good bargain, and thats what I like about the Thermopro TP20 thermometer. It comes with a Lifetime Sensor Probe warranty. Which means if I’m careless or use the probes incorrectly and I destroy them, thermopro will replace them free of charge. Now thats a bargain I like.

Thermopro TP20 Pros

Unlike the Maverick ET733, there is no syncing required for the thermopro tp20 thermometer. Right out of the box, just put the batteries in and the Thermopro TP20 is ready to go!

  •  Range is 300 feet which means you don’t have to be a slave to the smoker or oven, join the party!! After all it is equiped with an alarm that will go off if your food goes above or below your programmed range
  • The probes are, like I said lifetime warranty!! You won’t find that anywhere else, and besides the are made with food grade stainless steel, are precise and accurate when it comes to telling you the exact temperature of your food. Doesn’t get any better than that, I think!
  • Thermopro TP20 thermometer has all the bells and whistles you may be looking for when it comes to smoking, and grilling. A great temperature range, of 32 F to 572F, along with a nice addition of a count up and down timer.
  • ThTP20  thermometer also has preset doneness levels for different types of meat such as rare, medium and well. Plus, preset temps for 9 different types of meats! This is great news for someone like me who burns just about everything I put on the grill!!

Thermopro TP20  Thermometer Cons

  • Are you fooled by the name? Do you think it is manufactured by Thermoworks? It isn’t. It is manufactured by Itronics. I hope you weren’t fooled.
  • 30-day Warranty just doesn’t cut it for me, even though they are giving you a lifetime warranty on the probes. I like a nice year warranty, but I think the company feels if something is going to go wrong, it will happen within the 30 days. Maybe they are right, so my suggestion is to use it a lot to make sure it is working as it should.

A lot of thermometers have the same issue and its when setting up the temps. If you overshoot your temp, you will have to go all the way thru the temps again. How come someone can’t fix this I have no idea.

Here’s my summary of Thermopro TP20 Thermometer

The Thermopro TP20  thermometer is so easy to use right out of the box. No one wants to spend hours reading over the instruction manual! It gives accurate temperature readings, and is multifunctional. But best of all, it does what a thermometer is supposed to do and that is to make sure you don’t under or overcook your food! And it works!

Barbecue Thermometers Take a Look

I’d like to think that Barbecue thermometers will last forever. After all, I pay good money for a product and I expect that. The reality is that most products today do not have a long life expectancy. What to do? Pick your product carefully. Check to see what the warranty is. Is the manufacturer a name that you have heard before and you can trust? Where is the product produced? Most likely China. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Manufacturers who have plants overseas have strict production guidelines and they produce quality products. If I am familiar with a manufacturer of a barbecue thermometer and feel it is well made, I will purchase it, but I never expect it to last a lifetime.

The biggest killer of Barbecue thermometers is water and heat. Digital styles have a motherboard, with lots of tiny wires and connections. Just like a smart phone, if it gets wet, more than likely it’s ruined. At that point, you can always try to immerse the digital barbecue thermometer in rice for a few days to help dry it out. It might work if you are lucky enough to catch thermometer before it is totally drenched. I say it’s always worth a try!

Heat can cook your digital thermometer too! If you see that you have melted the exterior thermometer casing, imagine what it may have done to the interior wires and motherboard? If you find that your barbecue thermometer isn’t working due to excessive temperatures, I am afraid there isn’t much you can do to resurrect it! Time for a new barbecue thermometer.

Treat your thermometer like you treat your smart phone. With care. Always keep it away from extreme heat and water. Never immerse the unit in water when cleaning. After use, just use paper towels to clean the exterior and probes. Remove the batteries when not in use. Batteries that are kept in the thermometer, can leak causing corrosion to the interior battery compartment and could leak onto the mother board.

Here are a few of the barbecue thermometers that I think are worth taking a look at:

Digital Thermometer

Your need a digital barbecue thermometer to Serve excellent, smoky, fall of the bone barbecue is all about temperature and time. Although time plays a role, temperature is vastly more important and critical to excellent results. You can smoke a piece of brisket for the recommended 1.5 hours per pound but if your smoker temperature and internal brisket temperature aren’t properly measured, the time spent smoking away offers little indication your meat is tender and ready.

You need a digital Barbecue Thermometer

Therefore, any backyard barbecue chef or grill master must have a high quality digital barbecue thermometer in their barbecue cooking equipment to check the temperature of their meat. There are two recommended types of digital thermometers to consider.

Probe Thermometers

The first are thermometers where a wired probe is positioned into the meat and connected to a digital display outside your grill or smoker. The probe is left in the meat during cooking. These thermometers have some distinct advantages. First, they limit the need to continually open and close your smoker or grill, keeping valuable heat inside and not extending your cooking times. Second, some of these thermometers come with a wireless remote that you can put in your pocket, giving you the freedom to do other things around the house instead of babysitting your grill or smoker. Third, some thermometers come with a second probe, which is an excellent benefit when you might be barbequing two different types of meat. Or, when barbequing just one type of meat, the second probe can be used to measure the internal temperature of your smoker as a back-up to any built-in thermometer you may have. The only major drawback with these thermometers would be costs, with some models in excess of $50. If you prefer the ease of measurement, the lack of opening and closing your smoker or grill, and the potential to read the temperature of your meat from inside the house, these thermometers are the way to go.

Instant Read Thermometers

The second type of thermometer are instant read thermometers, sometimes referred to as stick thermometers, which are a one piece thermometer with a digital read out which can be used to check temperature and removed. These thermometers have some advantages as well. Primarily, most are inexpensive compare to the thermometers discussed above. But they’re also very easy to use and if you’re cooking more than one type of meat, it’s easy to check the temperature of all of them. Also, it’s an easier and handier product to use around your kitchen anytime. These thermometers, although they work very well, have some issues that you need to consider. The first is, when barbecue and smoking, these thermometers require you to constantly open and close your smoker or grill to check temperatures, which causes lost heat and slows your cooking times. Some of these units are not waterproof and if accidently dropped in water or even sauce, which is a real possibility in the kitchen, they’ll be ruined. If you don’t use a thermometer often but still want one, these thermometers offer a great balance between utility and cost.

Like everything associated with barbecuing and smoking, personal preferences and financial considerations will help you in selecting a thermometer.

Safe Handling Procedures for Food

When you don your apron and fire up the grill, do not forget your most important weapon in your food safety toolbox—the food thermometer. Proper cooking temperatures kill food borne bacteria. Despite what many people believe, color is not a reliable indicator of doneness. Meat and poultry cooked on a grill often brown quickly and may appear done on the outside, but still may not have reached a safe minimum internal temperature to kill any harmful bacteria. The food thermometer provides an accurate reading of internal temperature. Place the thermometer in the thickest part of the meat to take a temperature reading.

Safe Minimum Internal Temperatures include:

Hot dogs—165 °F or until steaming hot,
Poultry—165 °F,
Ground beef and other ground meat—160 °F,
Whole cuts of pork, lamb, veal and beef—145 °F (followed by a three-minute rest time), and
Fish—145 °F.

Remember to place cooked meats on a clean platter, not on the dish that held the raw product. The juices left on the plate from raw meat can spread bacteria to safely cooked food.

What is HACCP and why do I need a HACCP Thermometer?

What exactly is HACCP and how does it relate to thermometers? HACCP- Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point system is a process that helps control and identify where hazards may occur during food production. The major risk factors during food production are microbiological, chemical and physical contaminants. With strict monitoring and control,HACCP Principals help to reduce the risk factors from the farm to the table.

Consumers are concerned mainly about pesticide residues on their food along with the use of antibiotics. But contrary to popular belief, those hazards are minute compared to the more dangerous hazards in the food industry of microbiological contamination of E. coli, listeria, campylobacter, Salmonella, and C lostridium botulinum.
Consumers can practice safe handling procedures at home by following proper handling, storage, cooking and cleaning procedures when purchasing meat or poultry. To ensure food safety, always refrigerate meat and poultry , separate cooked and raw food, Use separate utensils and dishes for raw and cooked food.  Thoroughly cook meat and poultry to the correct temperature, and refrigerate leftovers to prevent bacterial growth.

So what does a HACCP certified thermometer mean to you? If you are a professional cook and are following HACCP procedures, you must have at least one thermometer that has a traceable certificate of calibration. A traceable certificate of calibration means that the thermometer has been extensively tested within a controlled environment at many temperature points to determine how accurate the thermometer is. The certificate states that the thermometer has been calibrated at a certain temperature point and how close to that temperature the thermometer is. If the thermometer is out of range such as +0.5 C you would add that out of range temperature to your temperature reading, so a reading of 10C would really be 10.5 C on a certificate of calibration thermometer.

What does a HACCP thermometer mean to the home cook or BBq’r? Simply stated the thermometer has been thoroughly tested and is extremely accurate. You can be assured the temperature displayed is correct within a certain temperature point and that it meets HACCP exacting standards.

Five Instant Read Thermometers Under $20

An Instant Read Thermometer for under $20?

Can you get a quality instant read thermometer under $20? Yes, you can! But It can be difficult to figure out which instant read thermometer has the best features and is really the best buy for the money. In order to figure out what are the top 5 instant read thermometers under $20 I determined what features are the most important in buying a quality thermometer.

Number 1 CDN DTQ450X Instant Read Thermometer

cdn instant read thermometerIt was no surprise that the CDN DQT450X instant read thermometer is the Number 1 best seller on amazon and is my number 1 pick for the best instant read thermometer. It is hard to find an instant read thermometer which offers a recalibrate feature, along with a maximum temperature range of -40 to 450, and an almost unheard of 5 year warranty. The only drawback which received a low mark on my rating scale was how fast a reading could be taken, which was between 6 to 8 seconds. Granted 6 to 8 seconds is super fast, but there are thermometers out there that give readings in the 3 to 5 second range, but they simply do not compare to the excellent features the CDN DTQ 450X has.

  • reading in 6-8 seconds
  • great for measuring temp in thin cuts of meat
  • 5-inch stainless steel stem
  • data-hold capabilities
  • 10-minute auto-off
  • Can be calibrated
  • Temperature range of -40 to 450 degrees F (-40 to 230 degrees C)
  • backed by 5-year limited warranty

Number 2 Taylor 9842 Instant Read Thermometer

taylor 9842 instant read thermometer 7Feature for feature, these two instant read thermometers are in a dead heat for the number one spot. The only reason the Taylor9842 came in second place is because they couldn’t beat the 5 year warranty of the CDN and the price point was a few dollars cheaper. Taylor offers a 1 year warranty on this thermometer.

  • Temperature range is from -40 to 450 degrees
  • Stem Measures 5- inches long
  • on/off button protects the life of the battery
  • easy-to-read 1-inch LCD dial
  • can be calibrated
  • Response time-6 seconds with 2 second updates
  • 1 year warranty

Number 3 Taylor Weekend Warrior 806E4L Instant Read Thermometer

taylor instant read thermometer weekend warriorAnother product by Taylor is the Weekend Warrior 806E4L. This is a great thermometer that competes with the top 2 thermometers on my list. Under $20 and has some great features such as temperature range of -40 to 450F.

  • Waterproof
  • backlit LCD screen
  • Can be recalibrated
  • one year warranty

Number 4 CDN DT450X Instant Read Thermometer

CDN DT450X Instant Read ThermometerRounding out the number 4 spot on my list of the top 5 instant read thermometers is another product by CDN. The CDN DT450X also has a a 5 year warranty which is simply hard to beat, but other features puts this instant read thermometer right where it belongs on this list such as a temperature range of -40 to 450F and 6 second readings. Why is it number 4? The thermometer is calibrated at the factory and there is no recalibration feature.

  • reading in 6-8 seconds
  • Factory calibrated/can not be calibrated
  • 5 year manufacturers warranty

Number 5 Comark PDT300 Instant Read Thermometer

comark instant read thermometerThe Comark PDT300 Instant Read Thermometer rounds out my list of the top 5 instant read thermometers under $20. With a 6 second reading result, and a recalibration feature, this thermometer is a great buy for under $20. It features a 6 second response time, 1 year warranty, and it has the re-calibration feature. Why is it number 5. The temperature range is only -58 to 300F

  • Waterproof
  • 6 second response time
  • calibrateable
  • 1 year manufacturer warranty
  • LCD Display
  • temperature range -58 to 300F

How the Ratings Were Assigned

My criteria in determining the top 5 instant read thermometers under $20 were , how fast does the thermometer deliver an accurate reading, minimum and maximum temperature levels, calibration, warranty, reviews, number of stars, and finally price. How did I come up with the most important things a consumer wants in a thermometer? I read reviews online, from Amazon, to Walmart, and went to the manufacturers of the thermometers to help me determine what a consumer wants in these products and what the differences are in the thermometers.
